Going Deeper Questions
Read Hebrews 4:14. Why should we hold fast our confession that Jesus is Lord? Dennis Johnson: “With warnings he prods Christians out of complacency. With encouragements he safeguards them from misgivings about God’s gracious disposition toward those who, despite their weakness and sin, nonetheless approach him through Jesus.” Is v. 14 a warning or an encouragement or both? Why?
The early Christians faced pressure to say “Caesar is Lord.” Today, pressure looks different. What areas of your life are hardest to fully surrender to Jesus’ lordship, and what would it look like to stop compromising “just a pinch”? Read Titus 1:16; Matthew 10:32–33; Romans 12:1-2
How does Jesus sympathizes with our weaknesses (see Hebrews 4:15)? What specific weakness or struggle do you need to honestly bring to Jesus this week? How does knowing He understands change the way you pray? Read Psalm 103:13–14; Hebrews 2:18.
Read Hebrews 4:16. How are we invited to approach God’s throne? Do you tend to avoid God when you fail, or run toward Him? What keeps you from coming boldly for mercy and grace? Read Romans 8:1; Ephesians 3:12.
How is temptation “a time of need”? How will you build a habit of praying immediately when tempted? In what ways is it encouraging that Jesus was “tempted in every way we are, yet without sin?” Read 1 Corinthians 10:13; Matthew 26:41.
Unlike Aaron, Jesus did not need to offer sacrifices for His own sin (see Hebrews 5:1–9). How does knowing Jesus is the sinless, perfect mediator affect your confidence before God? Read 1 Timothy 2:5–6; 2 Corinthians 5:21.
Jesus “learned obedience” through suffering and became the source of eternal salvation (see Hebrews 5:8–9). How has God used suffering or hardship in your life to grow your obedience or dependence on Him? Read James 1:2–4; Romans 5:3–5.
Salvation is a gift of grace, not something we achieve (see Romans 3:23–25). How do we try to earn God’s salvation? Why does this not work? Read Ephesians 2:8–9; Isaiah 64:6.
Jesus is our High Priest “forever and always lives to intercede for us” (see Hebrews 7:25). How does it encourage you to know Jesus is interceding for you right now? How might this truth change the way you face trials or temptation this week? Read Romans 8:34; John 17:20.
