Going Deeper Questions
Read Genesis 14:17-24. What does Abraham do when Melchizedek gives him a blessing? How is this interpreted in Hebrews 7:1-3? What does your giving—of time, resources, and worship—reveal about who you believe is truly worthy, and how can you honor Jesus with your “first and best” (see Proverbs 3:9; Romans 12:1)? Dennis Johnson says: We honor God as the giver of all of our possessions and enabler of all of our successes when we return, as his tribute, some of his gifts to provide for those who bless us in his name (1 Cor. 9:1–14; Gal. 6:6–8).
According to Hebrews 7:3 to whom does Melchizedek point?
Hebrews 7 contrasts temporary priests with Jesus’ “indestructible life” (Hebrews 7:16, 24). How does the reality that Jesus never changes or dies give you stability in uncertain or difficult seasons (Hebrews 13:8)?
How is the old priesthood described in Hebrews 7:18-19? What modern “systems” or habits (performance, morality, religion, success) are you tempted to rely on instead of trusting in Jesus alone (Galatians 3:3)?
Hebrews 7:19 says that through Jesus “we draw near to God.” How often are you intentionally drawing near to God in prayer and Scripture, and what practical changes can help you pursue deeper communion with Him (see James 4:8; Psalm 145:18)?
What is God’s oath in Psalm 110:4? How does Jesus fulfill it? In what ways can you grow in confidence in God’s promises when circumstances make you doubt (Numbers 23:19; 2 Corinthians 1:20)?
If Jesus always lives to intercede for you (Hebrews 7:25; Romans 8:34), how does that change the way you respond to guilt, shame, or ongoing sin in your life?
Why is it important that Jesus is High Priest forever (see Hebrews 7:24-25)? Dennis Johnson says, “Since the patriarch Abraham, our exemplar of faith (Heb. 6:12–15; 7:4), received God’s blessing through a priest greater than his offspring Levi and Aaron, we too need a superior priest—one who is king of righteousness and peace—to bless us with righteousness and peace. This greater priest-king, Jesus, has arrived at last. Having died once for all to atone for our sins, he has risen from the dead and lives forever to intercede for us. So we may—and must—‘draw near to God through him’ in prayer and worship (7:25).”
How does Hebrews 7:26 describe Jesus? Why is he the High Priest we need?
Who will represent you on the final day of judgment—yourself or Jesus? Why is this important?
