Going Deeper Questions

  1. Peter O’Brien says: “The notion of hope in future salvation has run like a scarlet thread throughout Hebrews (see Hebrews 3:6; 6:11, 18; 7:19; 10:23), it is intimately related to the divine promises (see Hebrews 4:1; 6:12, 17; 7:6; 8:6; 9:15; 10:36) and inheritance (see Hebrews 1:14; 6:12, 17; 9:15) that are yet to be attained.”

  2. R. Kent Hughes provides a list of things we “hope for”:

    • We hope for Christ’s return (see Titus 2:13).

    • We hope for the resurrection (see 1 Peter 1:3).

    • We hope for glorification (see 1 John 3:2, 3).

    • We hope to reign with him (see 2 Timothy 2:12; Rev. 22:5).

  3. Read James 2:17. What does it say about faith? Why does James say that when we consider what we learn in Hebrews 11:1? What specific actions in your life currently demonstrate that your faith is real? Where might your actions be contradicting your beliefs?

  4. Read 2 Cor. 5:7. What “unseen” situation in your life is hardest for you to trust God with right now, and why? How will you trust the Lord this week with it?

  5. Read Genesis 5:24. What did Enoch do? What did God do? In what ways will you walk with God this week?

  6. How was Noah motivated according to v. 7? Are you motivated by godly fear? Read Prov. 9:10-11. What do we learn about wisdom? What tangible ways will you seek God’s wisdom this week?

  7. How did Abraham live by faith in v. 8? How can you model this kind of faith?

  8. Read Heb. 11:25-26. Do you live by this kind of faith – choosing to suffer rather than enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin? Why or why not?

  9. Why is faith essential (see v. 6)?

  10. How does having an eternal perspective help grow your faith? See Romans 8:18.

  11. In what ways do you have faith in your agenda for God than just have faith in God? What do you need to do to change?
