Going Deeper Questions

  1. Read Hebrews 3:1–6. What does it practically look like for you to “consider Jesus” this week? Where are you most tempted to trust lesser things instead of trusting Jesus as the faithful Son over God’s house?

  2. How is Jesus greater than Moses? Donald Guthrie says, “The mission of the servant, great though it was, prepares the way for the far greater mission of the Son.” Dennis Johnson says, “Jesus affirmed that Moses wrote about his sufferings and subsequent glories.” Read John 5:44–47; Luke 24:25–27, 44–49.

  3. Read Hebrews 3:12, 19. How can unbelief quietly rob us of God’s rest even when we are active in church life? Have you experienced spiritual exhaustion that may be rooted in unbelief rather than busyness?

  4. Read Hebrews 3:7–11; Exodus 17:6–7. In what ways do you see Israel’s wilderness story reflected in your own life? Where are you tempted to ask, “Is the Lord among us or not?” during seasons of uncertainty?

  5. Read Hebrews 3:8, 15. What are some signs that a heart is becoming hardened toward God? How does sin’s deception slowly dull our responsiveness to God’s voice?

  6. Read Hebrews 3:12. How have loss, disappointment, or church hurt challenged your trust in God? What does it look like to bring lament to God while still choosing to trust His faithful love? (Psalms of lament 13, 22; Imprecatory Psalms: Ps. 35, 59, 69, 109, 137)

  7. Read Hebrews 3:13; Hebrews 10:23–25. Why is daily encouragement from other believers essential to persevering faith? Who encourages you spiritually, and who might God be calling you to encourage? Who will you contact this week to encourage?

  8. Read Hebrews 3:14; Matthew 24:13. What does it mean to “hold firmly until the end” the faith you had at the beginning? What practices help you keep following Jesus when faith feels costly?

  9. Read Hebrews 4:1–2. Also Numbers 14:2-4. What did the Israelites say? Why did not get to enter God’s Rest? How can someone hear the gospel and still fall short of God’s rest? What is the difference between knowing the gospel and truly believing it?

  10. Read Hebrews 4:9–11; Ephesians 2:8–9. What does it mean to stop striving and rest from your own works before God? Where might you be trying to earn God’s approval instead of resting in Christ’s finished work?

  11. Read Hebrews 4:12–13; Isaiah 55:10–11. How is God’s Word currently exposing, healing, or challenging your heart? Are you allowing God’s Word to do its work in you, or resisting what it reveals? What will you do this week to trust God?
