Going Deeper Questions

  1. Hebrews ends with a benediction (v. 20-21) that points believers to “the God of peace.” Read Romans 15:33; 16:20; 2 Corinthians 13:11; Philippians 4:9; and 1 Thessalonians 5:23. How does God’s peace differ from the world’s definition of peace? In what area of your life do you most need God’s peace (shalom) right now? See what Jesus says about peace in John 14:27.

  2. Jesus is called “the great Shepherd of the sheep.” In what ways have you experienced Jesus leading, protecting, correcting, or caring for you like a shepherd (Psalm 23:1; John 10:11-18; 1 Pet. 5:6-7)? Where are you resisting His leadership? What will you do to follow Jesus more closely this week?

  3. God does all things for His glory. Read these verses: Rom. 11:36; 16:27; Eph. 3:21; Phil. 4:20; Jude 25; Rev. 1:6. How will you glorify God in your life this week?

  4. What is the New Covenant? Describe it in your own words. God’s promises to establish an ‘eternal covenant’ with his people (2 Sam. 23:5; Isa. 55:3; 61:8; Jer. 32:40; 50:5; Ezek. 16:59–60; 37:26).” OLD covenant thinking is, “I’ve been a good person and I can earn my way to God.” NEW covenant faith says, “Jesus died in my place and I trust His grace to lead me home.” Which covenant do you live under today? Read: Romans 3:10-24; Ephesians 2:8-10; Hebrews 10:19-22.

  5. Hebrews 13:21 says God equips believers “with everything good to do his will.” What is one area where you feel weak, broken, or inadequate right now? How does it encourage you that God Himself is the one equipping and mending you? Read: Hebrews 13:21; Philippians 2:12-13; 2 Corinthians 12:9-10

  6. God does not exist for us; we exist for God. How does that challenge the way you respond to suffering, disappointment, success, or blessing? What would change if God’s glory became your highest aim? Read: Romans 11:36; 1 Corinthians 10:31; Isaiah 43:6-7

  7. Hebrews 13:22 urges believers to “receive this message of exhortation.” What does it mean to receive this message? What warning, encouragement, or truth most convicted or strengthened you in Hebrews? What specific action do you need to take in response?

  8. The final word of Hebrews is “grace.” See where else grace is mentioned in Hebrews: 2:9-10; 4:16; 12:15; 13:9. How can you live more deeply in the grace of God and extend that same grace to others in your family, church, friendships, or workplace this week?
