Going Deeper Questions

  1. Where did Paul go first in Thessalonica (v. 2)? What did he do there? What is the source of power in gospel proclamation? In what ways do you see people leaving Scripture behind?

  2. Take time to memorize: Romans 3:23, 6:23; 10:9-10; Acts 16:31; John 14:6 and 1 Peter 2:24. These are helpful passages when sharing the gospel.

  3. Why was it necessary for Jesus to suffer and rise from the dead (v. 3)? See Luke 24:26-27.

  4. Why were the Jews jealous (v. 4)? What did they do because of their jealousy? Do you struggle with jealousy? What will you do about it?

  5. Brian Vickers says “They are jealous over Paul and Silas’s winning people to Christ because such conversions threaten their tradition and history (ignoring the fact that their tradition and history have come to fulfillment in Jesus of Nazareth).”

  6. We talked about kings others than Jesus (money, comfort, pleasure). Why are these kings insufficient? What kings other than Jesus do you find yourself following? Pray about it today and ask the Holy Spirit to help you stay close to Jesus. Read Philippians 3:20-21. How does this give you hope?

  7. Read 1 Thess. 2:18. Paul and Silas are hindered from Thessalonica. Who hindered him?

  8. Read Matthew 10:29; John 12:25. What has it cost you to follow Jesus? Why is it worth it?

  9. How were the Berean Jews different (v. 11)? What did they do? How is it a good example for us today? Be specific.

  10. John Stott said: “The kingship of Jesus has unavoidable political implications since, as his loyal subjects, we must refuse to give to any ruler or ideology the supreme homage and total obedience which are due to [Jesus] alone.”

  11. 1 Thess. 1:9-10 says: You turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God   and to wait for


    his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead—Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath.
