Going Deeper Questions
11 th Century French theologian Hildebert of Lavardin said:
“God is over all things, under all things; outside all; within but not enclosed;
without but not excluded; above but not raised up; below but not
depressed; wholly above, presiding; wholly beneath, sustaining; wholly
within, filling.”
What is hard for you to understand about God’s omnipresence?
Read Stephen’s speech in Acts 7:48-50 – notice he quotes a prophet. It’s
Isaiah 66:1-2. Read that passage. What does this teach us about God’s
omnipresence? What does Isaiah call us to do?
Big God, small me. In what ways do you think God is small or you are big,
or both? What is the result of such belief or mindset?
Wayne Grudem says, “God is a being who exists without size or
dimensions in space. God relates to space in a far different way than we do
or than any created thing does.”
Read Jeremiah 23:23-24. What do we learn about God’s omnipotence
from this passage?
Why does it not work for God to be everything (pantheism)?
Even though we know we cannot run from God’s presence we do it
anyway. Why is this?
Is God present in hell? Why or why not? Does God’s presence always have
the same emphasis? Read Psalm 46. What can we learn about God’s
presence, especially verse 4-5?
How do we see God’s presence in the person of Jesus? (see Jn. 1:1-14;
Heb. 1:3)? Why was it important for God to put on flesh?
Read 1 Cor. 6:18-20. What is the context? What will you do about this
truth this week?
How will God’s omnipresence help you pray, grow in contentment, grow
in happiness this week?
Do you feel far from God? What will you do about it? Augustine said: “To draw near to Him is to become like Him; to move away from Him is to become unlike Him.”
