Going Deeper Questions
- Read Exodus 20:12-17. What is the most difficult command for you to follow? Why? In what ways do you need to change the way you think about God or others?
- J. Alec Motyer points out the connection between the 4 th and 5 th Commandments: “The fourth commandment [keep Sabbath holy] deals with the ordering of life in imitation of God; the fifth deals with achieving security of life by the honoring of parents. The life ordered according to God’s priorities will receive his blessing (v. 11); the honoring of parents is the key to social stability and security of tenure in the land.”
- Read Eph. 6:2-3. What does Paul say about this Commandment? How will you honor your father and mother this week?
- What is the 6 th commandment (v. 13)? Where does murder originate (see Matt. 5:21-22). Is there anger in your heart? What will you do to change?
- What is the 7 th Commandment (v. 14)? Desmond Alexander says: “At the heart of this commandment is the issue of faithfulness in relationships.” Alec Motyer says: “Marital infidelity involves going back on one’s pledged word and therefore is a departure from the image of God.” Read Matthew 5:27-28. What does Jesus say about adultery? Based on Jesus’ definition, have you committed adultery? What will you do to change?
- What is the 8 th Commandment (v. 15)? What are some ways we steal today? Philip Ryken provides a surprising statistic: “According to some estimates, as much as one-third of a product’s cost goes to cover the various forms of stealing that occur on its way to the marketplace.” The heart issue in stealing is a lack of contentment. Read Phil 4:12-13. How do people take v. 13 out of context? What does v. 13 really mean when it comes to contentment?
- What is the 9 th Commandment (v. 16)? Are you honest? Why or why not? Read James 3:2-12. What do we learn about the tongue?
- What is the 10 th Commandment (v. 17)? Does this command focus on our deeds, words or thoughts? How does this commandment affect the other commandments? Read Genesis 3:6-7. How did the man and woman covet?
- These Ten Commandments (God’s moral law) provide the way for Israel to be set apart from other nations as they head into the Promised Land. Peter Enns: “If Israelites cannot behave properly toward their God and cannot treat each other as ‘special people,’ as God treated them, how can they ever be a light to the Gentiles?” How does this principle apply to us as Christians today? Be specific.
- How did the people respond to God’s Words in v. 18-19?
- What is the motivation to not sin in v. 20? Is this a motivation for us today? Why or why not?
- Read v. 21. What is God doing? This is also recounted in Ps. 18:9; 97:2. What does this teach us about God?
- How can we approach an infinitely holy God (see Heb. 4:15-16)? Take time to thank God for sending Jesus to be our Great High Priest so we may approach Him with confidence!
