Going Deeper Questions

  1. Read Joel 3:1. Compare the phrase, “in those days and at that time” with Jeremiah 33:15; 50:4, 20. This phrase is used to encourage the people of God. Why should God’s people be encouraged? See Joel 2:18-32.
  2. What will God do in v. 2-8? Why will He do it? What does this teach us about God?
  3. God will repay. Allan Harman says: “While slaves from Judah had been sold off to the north, now men of Judah will be involved in sending off slaves in the opposite direction, to the far southeast, as fulfillment of the covenantal curse—now applied to Judah’s enemies!—of being scattered among the nations (Lev. 26:33; Deut. 28:64).”
  4. Read V. 10-11. This is a reversal of Isaiah 2:4 and Micah 4:3 where an age of peace is promised to God’s people and they can turn their weapons into farming tools! Leslie Allen says: “[These passages] spoke of universal peace. By reversing the old words Joel implies widespread involvement in this war of judgment.”
  5. Read v. 12. What will God do? What will happen? Compare with Daniel 7:9-10. Allan Harman says: “Though the Gentile nations are assembling their forces, no threat can be made against the Lord and his forces, for he sits on the judgment throne.”
  6. Read v. 13-14 Leslie Allen: “It was the enormity of their own wickedness that had brought them here to receive the…judgment of God.”
  7. Read v. 15-16a. Raymond Dillard says: “The God whose thundering voice causes the universe to reverberate is also a refuge to his people.” God is our refuge in Ps. 46 (Read this Psalm). Allan Harman says: “To his and his people’s enemies the Lord will be the supreme judge, while to his own he will be both a refuge and a stronghold.”
  8. What will God provide for his people in v. 17-21? How does this give you comfort today? Compare the end of v. 21 with John 1:14; Phil. 2:7-8
  9. Read 2 Peter 3:10-12. How does this passage challenge you this week? How does it encourage you? What will you do about it?
