Going Deeper Questions
- What does this mean that the Lord got His people out of Egypt. But the Lord wants to get Egypt out of them! In what ways is the world in us? How does God get the world out of us?
- Read Exodus 15:22 and Acts 14:22b. R. Kent Hughes says: “The lesson is easy to apply. The church is now living in the wilderness between the first and second comings of Christ. He came once to save us; he will come again to lead us home. In the meantime we are on a long and difficult pilgrimage, which God is using to make us holy.”
- What is the problem for Israel at the end of v. 22? Imagine being in their shoes. How would you feel?
- Why couldn’t the Israelites drink the water at Marah (v. 23)? Read Ruth 1:20-21. How does Naomi respond to the people in Bethlehem? What does bitterness do to a person? How does bitterness come out of us (see 1 Cor. 10:10). What can we do to combat bitterness?
- How do the people respond to the bitter water (v. 24)? How does Moses respond (v. 25)? Why is Moses’ response more appropriate? What do you complain about the most? What do you need to do to complain less?
- Read v. 26. R. Kent Hughes says: “Usually we associate his law with the Ten Commandments given at Mount Sinai, but even before the Israelites reached the holy mountain, God required them to live for his glory. They were to listen to what he said, do what he wanted, attend to what he commanded, and keep what he decreed.”
- What are the commands of God you have trouble obeying? Pray and ask the Lord to help you be more obedient this week.
- At the end of v. 26 the Lord reveals something about himself. What is it? Read Psalm 103:3; Matt. 4:23. How does God heal today?
- Dietrich Bonhoeffer says: “We, too, pass through the Red Sea, through the desert, across the Jordan into the promised land. With Israel we fall into doubt and unbelief and through punishment and repentance experience again God’s help and faithfulness. All this is not mere reverie but holy, godly reality. We are torn out of our own existence and set down in the midst of the holy history of God on earth. There God dealt with us, and there He still deals with us, our needs and our sins, in judgment and grace.”
- How do we see the gospel in this passage?
