Going Deeper Questions
- Where do you see yourself doubting God’s Word like Zechariah did? (Luke
1:18) What promises of God are hardest for you to take at face value right now, and what might obedience look like in those areas? - What does God’s “visit” (Luke 1:68, 78) mean to you personally this Advent? Where do you need to acknowledge that God has already come near in your life?
- Read Joel 2:28. How is this beginning to be fulfilled in Zechariah’s song?
- Jesus is the “horn of salvation”—God’s powerful rescuer (Luke 1:69; 2 Sam. 22:2–3) What enemies (sin patterns, fears, habits) do you need to trust Jesus to conquer in your life?
- God keeps His covenant with David (2 Sam. 7:13) AND Abraham (Gen. 12:2-3). Which of His promises do you need to cling to this season? How will you anchor your heart more intentionally to God’s covenant faithfulness?
- Zechariah celebrated redemption (Luke 1:68). Where do you need redemption right now (see Col. 1:13–14)? What part of your life feels “owned” by sin or brokenness and needs God’s buying-back power?
- Are you serving God “without fear” as one who has been rescued (Luke 1:74–75; Eph. 2:10)? How is fear holding you back from obedience or ministry God is calling you into?
- Who is the Lord calling you to forgive in light of the forgiveness Jesus offers? Read Eph. 4:32. What step of forgiveness can you take this week—even if the person does not respond?
- Are you living as someone who truly “knows” you are saved? (Luke 1:77; 1 John 5:13) How would your life look different if you more fully rested in the knowledge and assurance of God’s salvation
- Where do you sense darkness in your life that needs the light of Christ? Read Luke 1:78–79; Isaiah 9:2. What would it look like to intentionally let Jesus’ light expose, heal, or guide that area?
- How is the peace of Christ shaping your relationships and responses? Read Luke 1:79; John 14:27. Where does your heart feel troubled—and what would it look like to invite Christ’s peace there?
- The gospel offers something far better than “eat, drink, and be merry.” What lesser “songs” (pleasures, distractions, comforts) are you tempted to live for instead of the greater song of Christ? How will you change your heart toward these worldly things this Christmas season?
- R. Kent Hughes asks these questions: Has “the sunrise . . . from on high” filled your life? Do you have the “knowledge of salvation”? Is Christ your mighty “horn of salvation”? Are you assured of “the forgiveness of . . . sins”? Have you been delivered from “the shadow of death”? Are you able to “serve him without fear”? Are your feet treading “the way of peace”?
