Going Deeper Questions

  1. What do the elders of Israel do in v. 1 when they ascend Mt. Sinai? Jay Sklar says: “By bowing low in worship from a distance, the delegation declares its tremendous respect and honor for the Lord as supreme covenant King.” What is the posture of your heart toward God today?
  2. Why is Moses the only one who may come directly into God’s presence? What does he do for the people? How is he a pointer to 1 Timothy 2:5?
  3. Does the response of the people in v. 3 surprise you? Why or why not?
  4. What did Israel offer in v. 5? How are these different?
  5. Look at v. 7. Why does Moses read the covenant aloud to the people? Jay Sklar explains: “This public reading and response appear to formalize the people’s commitment.” J. Alec Motyer says: “They will be wholly people of the revealed word.” Are you a Christian of the Word?
  6. Why does Moses splatter the people with blood? See Heb. 9:22. Peter Enns: “This blood sprinkled on the people indicates that the fellowship between them and God has been confirmed…the blood of the covenant.” “Just as the Israelites’ covenant responsibilities included being ‘a kingdom of priests and a holy nation,’ so has Jesus in the new covenant rescued us to be the same (1 Pet. 2:9).”
  7. Read Ephesians 1:7. What did God do for us in Christ?
  8. What did the group of leaders see in v. 10? Compare this passage with Ezekiel 1:26-28; Isaiah 6:1-3; Revelation 4:1-11. What is God like?
  9. What does God give Moses in v. 12? Who does Moses leave in charge in v. 14? What did the people see in v. 15-17? What do you think was their reaction? Read Hebrews 12:28-29. How doe we apply this to our lives?
  10. Moses will spend forty days receiving instructions on how to build the Tabernacle (the place God will dwell among His people). Alec Motyer says: “The tabernacle was ‘a perpetual extension of the bond that was forged at Sianai.” Read John 1:14. The word, “dwelt” is literally, “tabernacled.” What does this say about Jesus?
