Going Deeper

  1. What does God do in v. 18. God’s jealousy is a “passionate concern.” Read about it in Zech. 1:14; 8:2. What does God do for His people in response to their repentance (2:15-17)?
  2. What does God give His people in v. 19-22? The “northerner” is a reference to the locusts that came from the north. Where are they now? What does this teach us about God?
  3. How is the Lord restoring the land (Joel 1:10) in v. 21? How is the Lord restoring the animals (Joel 1:18, 20) in v. 22? How is the Lord restoring the people?
  4. G. A. Smith says: “Rain and harvest are not merely physical benefits but religious sacraments: signs that God has returned to his people and that his zeal is again stirred on their behalf.” See Deut. 11:13-15.
  5. Read Psalm 126:3 What has the Lord done for you? Are you joyful?
  6. What does God promise His people in v. 24-26? Allan Harman says: “The Lord is restoring former blessings (“I will restore” v. 25). Curse and blessing both come from him.” What does this teach us about God?
  7. What does God say in v. 27? How is this a theme in the Bible? Do you know God? Why is there not “another” god besides the Lord?
  8. Read v. 28-29. The Hebrew word for “spirit” (ruakh) has a range of meaning (wind, breath, spirit), including reference to the Spirit of God/the Lord (see 1 Kings 18:12; 2 Kings 2:16; Ezek. 37:1), the Holy Spirit (Ps. 51:11; Isa. 63:10, 11). When is God’s Spirit poured out (see Acts 2)?
  9. Read v. 30-31. What wonders are displayed? See Rev. 8:12. Do you fear the end times? Why or why not?
  10. Read v. 32. What is promised to those who call upon the name of the Lord? Saved from what? See Isa. 26:20-21. How does God save us?
  11. If you have been saved, you are called to live out your restoration every day. One way to do that is found in Colossians 3:5-14. Read it! What, on this list, will you put to death this week? What will you put on? Pray right now and ask the Holy Spirit to help you.
