Going Deeper Questions
- The locust plague in Joel reminds us of Exodus 10. Leslie Allen says: “The great God of the Exodus, who had intervened to strike down the enemies of his people in signal acts of judgment, was at work again. But now were not his own people at the receiving end of his outstretched hand of judgment?” What does this teach us about God?
- Theophany (manifestation of God) leads often to fear. Read Gen. 3:10; Ex. 3:6; Ps. 96:9; 97:4; Jer. 4:9; 5:22; Amos 3:8. Why?
- Raymond Dillard says: “The second description of the locust invasion [is]an extended metaphor based on the locust outbreak described in chapter 1; the prophet uses the recent plague as a harbinger of the impending day of the Lord, the day of judgment when the Lord himself will come at the head
of his heavenly army.” - What is the Day of the Lord like according to v. 2-10?
- Read v. 11. What word is repeated? Who is in charge?
- Verses 12-13 are a fulfillment of God’s promise to Solomon in 2 Chron. 7:14-15. What does God promise Solomon?
- What is true repentance? How do you need to repent today?
- What should we tear in v. 13? What does this look like in our lives?
- Read v. 13b. What aspect of God’s nature stands out to you? Why?
- Read v. 14. This language is used by the King of Nineveh (Jonah 3:9). What do we learn about the Lord in the book of Jonah?
- Read the prayer in v. 17b. Compare to the language of Ps. 74, 79:9-10; 42:3; 10:4, 11; 115:2; Mic. 7:10. Leslie Allen explains the point of this prayer: “Joel has been laboring to wean the people away from indifference and insensitivity to the things of God. This suggested prayer marks the climax of his endeavor…” In what ways are you indifferent or insensitive to the things of God? What will you do to change this week?
- Read Psalm 91:1-6. What does this teach us about God’s grace?
